ammunition はフランス語 la munition の切れ目を英語側で取り違えた形で、もとはラテン語 munitio「防備」。語根は munire「防備する」で、munition や mural と同根なので、「守るための軍需品」から弾薬の意味になったと分かります。
Ammunition came into English through French la munition, but English speakers misunderstood where the word began and reshaped it as ammunition. The older source is Latin munitio, from munire, meaning "to fortify" or "defend." It first referred to military supplies for defense, then narrowed mainly to bullets, shells, and similar materials; munition is a close relative.
