oath は古英語 āþ「誓約・神前の誓い」にさかのぼり、さらにゲルマン祖語 *aiþaz に由来します。神や聖なるものを証人に立てて言葉の真実を固める感覚が核で、現代の「誓い」につながります。関連語にドイツ語 Eid、古ノルド語 eiðr があります。
Oath comes from Old English ath, meaning a formal promise or sacred pledge. It goes back to Proto-Germanic *aithaz, and has close relatives in German Eid and Old Norse eithr. The central idea was a spoken promise made with a holy power as witness, which later became the general English sense.
