余剰（よじょう）とは、必要な量よりも多く残っている、または余った部分のことです。使い切れずに余っている状態や、需要を超えた供給を表します。
A surplus is an amount that is extra or more than what is needed. It is often used for money, goods, or production, especially in business, trade, and economics. It suggests an excess, and the opposite idea is a shortage or deficit.

surplusは古フランス語surplusから入り、さらにラテン語super「上へ・超えて」とplus「より多い」にさかのぼります。必要量を越えて上にはみ出した分だと考えると「余剰」が見えやすく、superiorやplusにも同じ核があります。
