ラテン語 annuntiare（ad-「～に向けて」+ nuntiare「知らせる」）が語源。フランス語 annoncer を経て英語に入った。nuntius（使者）が語根で、announceは「公に知らせる」意。同根語にannunciation（受胎告知）やpronounce（宣言する）がある。
