Announcer is formed from the verb announce and the agent suffix -er, meaning a person who performs an action. Announce entered English through Old French anoncer or anoncier and ultimately comes from Latin annuntiare, “to report or make known.” That Latin verb combines ad-, “to,” with nuntiare, “to report,” from nuntius, “messenger or news.” The spelling and pronunciation changed as the word passed through French into English.
