細菌だけでなく、真菌や一部の微生物など広い範囲の微生物に作用し、その増殖を抑えたり死滅させたりする性質を表します。医薬品、素材、コーティング、衛生製品の説明でよく使われます。抗菌より広い概念として使われる語です。
This adjective describes something that kills microorganisms or limits their growth. It can apply to medicines, fabrics, coatings, and hygiene products and covers a broader range of organisms than bacteria alone.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
anti- は「反対・防ぐ」、micro- は「小さい」で、まず『小さな生き物に対抗する』と分けて覚えると意味が見えます。micro は microscope、biology は bio など既知語ともつながります。ポイントは antibacterial より広く、細菌だけでなく真菌などの微生物全般に使えること。antimicrobial soap, coating, activity のような形でよく出て、必ずしも kill ではなく growth を抑える場合も含む、と押さえると定着しやすいです。
Divide antimicrobial into anti-, meaning "against," and microbial, meaning "related to microorganisms." Remember that it is broader than antibacterial: it may act against fungi and other microorganisms as well as bacteria, and it may slow growth rather than kill them.

antimicrobial は anti-「反対して」＋ microbial「微生物の」から成り、microbe はフランス語経由でギリシャ語 mikros「小さい」＋ bios「生命」に由来します。つまり「小さな生命体に対抗する」で、microbe や biology と結ぶと意味が腑に落ちます。
Antimicrobial combines anti- ("against") with microbial ("of microorganisms"). Microbe came through French from Greek mikros ("small") and bios ("life").
