解説 Definition
4世紀初頭のキリスト教神学思想。アレクサンドリアの司祭アリウスが主張した説で、キリストは神の子だが完全な神ではないという教義。正統派から異端とされた。
Arianism is an early Christian belief that Jesus Christ, the Son, was created by God the Father and was not fully equal to Him. It is mainly used in religious history and theology.

-ism が付くと『主義・思想』なので、まず arianism を『Arian（アリウス派の）という立場そのもの』とまとまりで覚える。Arius という人名に由来するため、一般語ではなく固有名からできた神学用語だと意識すると残りやすい。文脈では Christianity, doctrine, heresy, orthodoxy と並びやすく、『キリストは父なる神と同格ではない』とする立場として押さえると、正統派との対立軸まで思い出せる。綴りが似る Aryanism とは別語なので混同に注意。

Arianism は神学者 Arius の名に、ギリシャ語由来の接尾辞 -ism「教義・主義」が付いた語。後期ラテン語 Arianus を経て入り、「アリウスの教え」からそのままアリウス派思想を指す。関連語は Arian、semi-Arianism。
