ashur
Definition
Ashur is the name of the chief national deity of ancient Assyria and also of the ancient city that served as an early political and religious center. In historical writing, variant spellings of the name may also be associated with Assyria itself.
Memory Tip
chief deity、Assyrian pantheon、temple なら神、city of Ashur や religious center なら都市を指します。
Remember Ashur through a three-part Assyrian connection: god, city, and state. Ashur was the chief deity of the Assyrian pantheon, while the city of Ashur was a major religious and political center. Context tells you which is meant: temples were dedicated to the god, but travelers, rulers, or excavations may be associated with the city. The shared spelling is historically meaningful because the deity and city were central to Assyrian identity. Link the opening sound and letters of Ashur with Assyria, while keeping Ashur distinct from the modern personal name Asher.

Etymology
アッカド語Aššur(アッシュル)に由来。 関連語: Assyria(アッシリア)、Syria(シリア=派生説あり)。
Ashur is a conventional English spelling of Akkadian Aššur. The name belonged both to the ancient city on the Tigris and to Assyria’s principal deity, and it also became closely associated with the country and its people. Scholars do not securely agree on a still earlier lexical derivation, so the historical identity of the city, god, and Assyrian state is firmer than any proposed literal meaning such as “guardian.”
