英国グロスターシャーの Badminton House（ボーフォート公爵邸）に由来。1870年代にこの邸宅でインド伝来の羽根つき遊戯が流行し、競技名となった。地名自体は古英語で「バドヘルムの農場」の意。
The sport takes its name from Badminton House, the Duke of Beaufort’s estate in Gloucestershire, England. A form of the racket-and-shuttle game brought from British India became fashionable there in the nineteenth century, and the estate’s name came to identify the game. Badminton itself was originally an English place name, traditionally interpreted as referring to the estate or settlement associated with a person named Badhelm.
