blucher の語源・成り立ち Etymology
プロイセンの将軍ブリュッヒャー(Gebhard von Blücher, 1742-1819)の名に由来。ワーテルローの戦いで活躍した彼が愛用した半長靴の形式がこの名で呼ばれるようになった。同様に軍人名由来の靴に wellington がある。姓 Blücher はゲルマン語で「輝く槍」の意。
The footwear term blucher comes from the surname of Prussian field marshal Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher, who fought against Napoleon and played a decisive role in the Waterloo campaign. A practical military half-boot associated with his troops came to bear his name in English. The spelling usually drops the German umlaut in the common noun. Wellington offers a comparable example of a military leader’s name becoming a term for a style of boot.
