降水量が少ないが砂漠ほどではない気候帯。年間降水量は通常250～500mm程度で、草地や低灌木の環境が特徴。

semi- は semicircle, semifinal の semi と同じで「半分・中間」。arid は dry より硬い言い方で「乾燥した」で、arid land, arid climate の形で出る。したがって semiarid は「完全な砂漠の arid ではないが、その手前まで乾いている」と段階で覚えるとよい。地理では semiarid region / semiarid climate が定番で、humid と対比しつつ、desert ほど極端ではない草地・低木地帯を思い浮かべると定着しやすい。
