sylph の語源・成り立ち Etymology
sylph は16世紀にパラケルススが空気の精霊名として用いた新ラテン語 sylphes を、フランス語 sylphe 経由で英語が借りた語です。語の細かな由来は確定しにくい造語ですが、まず「空気の精」が中心で、そこから sylphid や sylphlike に見られる「ふわりと軽く細身の女性像」の意味が後に広がりました。
Sylph entered English from French sylphe, which came from New Latin sylphes. It was probably invented in the 16th century by Paracelsus as the name of an air spirit, rather than growing from an older everyday word. Later in English, it came to suggest a light, delicate, almost airy woman; related forms include sylphlike and sylphid.
