Subregions are smaller areas inside a larger region. This word is often used in geography, planning, and research to show that one large area can be divided into more specific parts.

subregions は、まず region「地域」が見えれば半分取れます。さらに sub- は subway, subtitle などでも出る「下位・下の」という感覚なので、「大きな region の下にある区分」と捉えると覚えやすいです。国→地方→県のように、全体をさらに細かく分けた単位を並べる場面で出やすい語です。region より細かく、area よりも地理・行政上の区分らしさが強い、と対比すると定着します。複数形で subregions として現れやすい点も一緒に覚えると便利です。
