proscription はラテン語 proscribere に由来し、pro-「前へ」+ scribere「書く」で、もとは「公に書き出すこと」でした。scribe や describe と同じ scrib- を持ち、名前を掲示して追放・禁止した歴史から、禁制という重い意味が生まれました。
Proscription comes from Latin proscribere, from pro- meaning "forth" and scribere meaning "to write." It first referred to writing up or posting a name in public. Because names were historically posted to mark people for exile or punishment, the word later took on the stronger sense of official banning or condemnation; the same scrib- root appears in scribe and describe.
