quetzal はスペイン語経由で古典ナワトル語 quetzalli「鮮やかな尾羽」に由来し、さらに quetza「立ち上がる・高く伸びる」に結びつきます。ひときわ立って目立つ羽の鳥だと思うと、この名の華やかさが腑に落ちます。Quetzalcoatl や Quetzalcoatlus も同じ quetzal- を含みます。
Quetzal came through Spanish from Classical Nahuatl quetzalli, meaning a bright or splendid tail feather. It is linked with a Nahuatl verb meaning "to rise up" or "stand tall." The name was applied to the bird because of its striking, upright-looking feathers. The same root appears in names such as Quetzalcoatl.
