subtitleはラテン語sub-「下・補助」＋title（titulus「題名」）から成り、もとは「主題名の下に添える副題」です。submarineやtitularが近い仲間で、映画の字幕も「映像の下に付く説明」の発想。だから主情報を支える補助ラベルだと見ると意味がつながります。
