subtitle はラテン語 sub-「下に」と titulus「表題」に由来し、もとは画面の下へ題句を添える語。-ing が付く subtitling は「字幕化」で、subway や subordinate も同じ sub- の「下に置く」感覚を共有する。
Subtitling comes from subtitle, built from Latin sub-, meaning "under," and titulus, meaning "title" or "label." The original idea was a title placed below the main image or text. With -ing, the word came to mean the act or process of adding such text.
