解説 Definition
subtitles は、映画・テレビ番組・動画などで、せりふを文字として表示する字幕です。翻訳や内容の理解を助けるために使われ、複数形で作品全体の字幕をまとめて指すことがよくあります。

subtitle に複数の -s を付けた形で、語尾は /z/ と発音します。sub-「下」＋title「表題」を手掛かりに、映像の下部に出る文字を連想しましょう。

Subtitles is the plural form of subtitle. Subtitle combines the prefix sub-, meaning “under” or “below,” with title. Title comes through Old French from Latin titulus, meaning an inscription, label, or heading. Subtitle first referred to a secondary or explanatory title placed beneath a main title. With the development of film, the word was applied to explanatory or translated text shown on the screen, and later especially to lines representing spoken dialogue.
