caption は古フランス語を経て、ラテン語 capere「つかむ」に由来する captio「取り込むこと・押収」から来た語です。関連語に capture、captive があり、文書の内容を先に“つかませる”見出しという感覚から、写真や図の説明文の意味になりました。
