caption の語源・成り立ち Etymology
caption は古フランス語を経て、ラテン語 capere「つかむ」に由来する captio「取り込むこと・押収」から来た語です。関連語に capture、captive があり、文書の内容を先に“つかませる”見出しという感覚から、写真や図の説明文の意味になりました。
Caption comes through French from Latin captio, from capere, meaning "to take" or "to seize." It first had legal senses connected with taking or arresting. Later it came to mean a heading or short text that helps a reader quickly "grasp" what follows; capture and captive are related words.
