地質・地形学で、砂やシルトが風に運ばれ、積もり、削られてできた地形・堆積物を指す専門形容詞。dune, deposit, loess, erosion などと結びつき、一般的な「風の」ではなく形成原因を示します。
Aeolian describes something that is formed, shaped, or moved by the wind. It is mainly used in geology and geography for natural features such as sand, soil, and dunes.

aeolian はギリシャ神話の風の神 Aiolos（Aeolus）に -ian「…に関する」が付いた語です。Aeolus や異綴りの eolian が近縁で、『風の神のもの』という発想から、風成の・風で形づくられたという意味がそのまま生まれました。
Aeolian comes from Aeolus, the wind god in Greek mythology, plus the adjective ending -ian. The word literally meant "connected with Aeolus" or "of the wind." Because of that, it came to describe things shaped, moved, or produced by wind. A related variant spelling is eolian.
