「bole」は古ノルド語 bolr「木の幹」に由来し、ゲルマン祖語では「ふくらんだ胴体」のイメージをもつ語でした。木の中心の太い部分を指すのは、幹が“膨らんだ本体”だからです。同根とされる ball や bowl にも、丸くふくらむ感覚が残っています。
Bole comes from Old Norse bolr, meaning the trunk of a tree. It goes back to an older Germanic idea of a swollen or rounded main body. That is why the word came to name the thick central part of a tree, and it may be related to English words like ball and bowl.
