ブルセラという細菌による感染症。主に牛や羊などの家畜から人間に感染し、発熱、疲労、関節痛を引き起こす。

brucellosis は細菌属名 Brucella からできた語で、Brucella はこの病原体研究で知られる医師 Bruce の名にちなみます。末尾の -osis はギリシャ語由来で「病的状態」を表し、「ブルセラ菌による病気」だと分かり、関連語に tuberculosis, neurosis があります。
Brucellosis was formed from Brucella, the name of the bacterial genus, plus the ending -osis. Brucella was named after the doctor David Bruce, who was known for research on the disease.
