神経症
解説 Definition
神経症とは、不安や恐怖などの過剰な心理反応を特徴とする精神疾患です。実際の危険がないのに、患者は強い不安感に苦しみます。通常、身体症状も伴うことがあります。
Neurosis is a mental or emotional condition involving strong anxiety, fear, or unhealthy thought patterns. It is an older psychological term and is less common in modern clinical use. It usually describes distress that affects a person's life but does not involve a complete loss of contact with reality.

neuro- は neurology, neural, neuron でも見かける「神経」グループ、-osis は医学語で「病的状態」と覚えると、neurosis は「神経・心のはたらきが不調な状態」と分解して理解できます。形容詞 neurotic も一緒に覚えると記憶に残りやすいです。単なる stress や worry より重く、ただ nervous なだけではない語。psychosis と並べて出ることもありますが、neurosis は不安・恐怖・強迫などの過剰反応を中心に語られる、と整理すると混同しにくいです。
