植物の花の最も外側にある器官で、つぼみの状態でつぼみを保護する萼（がく）の部分。
A calyx is the outer part of a flower, made up of small leaf-like parts called sepals. It surrounds and protects the flower bud before it opens. This word is mainly used in biology and botany.

calyx はラテン語 calyx を経て、ギリシャ語 kalyx（つぼみの外皮・殻）にさかのぼる語。花を包む外側の部分という原義が、そのまま植物学の「がく」になった。calyceal や calycle も同根で、「覆う殻」の感覚を持つと覚えやすい。
Calyx came into English through Latin calyx from Greek kalyx. In Greek it meant the outer covering of a bud, husk, or shell. That idea of a covering stayed the same in botany, where the word came to mean the outer part of a flower; related forms include calyceal and calycle.
