肉を食べる動物。草食動物の対比として、自然界の食物連鎖で肉を主な栄養源とする生き物を指します。
A carnivore is an animal that eats other animals as its main food. The word is used in biology and when describing diet in nature. In broader use, it can also refer to a person who eats a lot of meat.

herbivore（草食動物）、omnivore（雑食動物）と3点セットで覚えると定着しやすい語。-vore は「〜を食べるもの」という共通パターンなので、前半が何を示すかで意味を取りやすい。carnivore は lion, wolf, shark のような肉を主に食べる動物をまとめるラベルで、動物図鑑やドキュメンタリーでは herbivore と対比されやすい。なお predator は「狩る側」で、必ずしも食性分類そのものではない点も区別すると混同しにくい。

ラテン語 carnivorus がもとで、carn- は caro/carnis「肉」、-vore は vorare「むさぼり食う」に由来します。つまり「肉を食らうもの」で、意味がそのまま形に出た語です。関連語に omnivore, voracious。
