carp は中英語を経て古フランス語 carpe、さらに俗ラテン語 carpa に由来し、ヨーロッパで鯉を指した魚名が英語に入った語です。姿の説明語ではなく固有の魚名の受け継ぎなので、仏語 carpe や独語 Karpfen に同根の形が残ります。
Carp came through Middle English and Old French carpe from Vulgar Latin carpa. It is an old fish name borrowed into English.
