celled の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ラテン語 cella(小部屋、貯蔵室)に由来し、修道院の小部屋を指した。科学者フックが顕微鏡で見た植物組織を小部屋に見立て cell と名付けた。関連語: cellar(地下室)、cellular(細胞の)。「小さな部屋」が生物の基本単位の名になった。
Celled is formed in English from cell plus the adjectival suffix -ed, meaning “provided with or having cells.” Cell comes through Old French and Latin cella, “small room, chamber, or storeroom.” In the seventeenth century, Robert Hooke used cell for the tiny boxlike compartments he observed in cork. That scientific use expanded until cell became the standard term for the basic structural unit of living organisms, allowing compounds such as single-celled and many-celled.
