The Cenozoic is the current major period of Earth's history, beginning after the age of dinosaurs ended. In geology, it refers to the era when mammals became the dominant form of animal life.

地質時代名は単独でなくセットで覚えると定着しやすい。Paleozoic（古生代）→Mesozoic（中生代）→Cenozoic（新生代）と時代順に並べ、語尾 -zoic は「生物の時代」を表すラベルだと見抜く。恐竜が栄えた Mesozoic の次、哺乳類や現代に近い生物が広がる“最も新しい地質時代”が Cenozoic。Mesozoic と取り違えやすいので、「恐竜の次」「今につながる時代」という場面イメージで固定するとよい。

cenozoic はギリシャ語 kainos「新しい」＋ zōē / zōon「生命・生物」＋ -ic からできた学術語。文字どおり「新しい生命の時代」で、恐竜後に現代型の生物が栄えた地質時代名だと考えると意味がつかみやすい。関連語は Mesozoic, Paleozoic。
Cenozoic is a scientific word built from Greek kainos, meaning new, and zōē or zōon, meaning life or living being, plus the adjective ending -ic. It literally means the age of newer life.
