Intersectionality is the idea that different parts of a person's identity, such as gender, race, or class, can combine and shape their life experience. It is mainly used in social studies and discussions of inequality to show that forms of advantage or discrimination can overlap.

まず intersection を「交差点」で固定すると覚えやすいです。道路が1本ではなく何本も交わる場所を思い浮かべ、その交点に1人が立っていると考えると、race・gender・class など複数の属性が重なって不利が生まれる感覚がつかめます。intersect / intersection が分かれば芯は同じで、語尾の -ality は personality と同じく「〜という性質・概念」を作る形。単なる equality や diversity ではなく、「属性の交差が生む経験」に焦点を当てる語だと区別すると残ります。

intersectionality は intersection「交差」と -ality「〜という性質」から成る現代英語です。intersection はラテン語 inter-「間で」+ secare「切る」に由来し、intersect や section と同根です。線や条件が交わる感覚から、複数の属性が重なり合う「交差性」を表します。
Intersectionality is a modern English formation from intersection and the noun suffix -ality. Intersection goes back to Latin inter, "between," and secare, "to cut," the same root seen in section and intersect. The image of lines cutting across each other later developed into the idea of different social identities meeting and overlapping.
