blooper は米語 bloop＋-er からできた語で、bloop はラジオの異音をまねた擬音語とされる。そこから「変な音を出すもの」や野球のポテンヒットを経て「しくじり」の意味が定着し、関連語に bloop・blooper reel がある。
Blooper was formed in American English from bloop plus the ending -er. Bloop is thought to be an imitative word for a strange or sudden sound, first used in radio and other settings. From there, the word came to mean an awkward mistake, especially a public or recorded one, as in blooper reel.
