gaffe はフランス語 gaffe「鉤・ひっかけ」から入り、さらに南仏系語の gaf にさかのぼるとされる。gaff と同根で、「言葉や振る舞いが相手に引っかかってしまう」と考えると、失言や大失策の意味が腑に落ちる。
Gaffe came from French gaffe, which meant a hook or pole with a hook, and it is related to English gaff. The idea behind the later meaning is that a mistake in speech or behavior "catches" awkwardly on other people. From that image, the word developed into the sense of a social blunder or embarrassing slip.
