古英語 calu「はげた・むき出しの」から来た語で、ゲルマン祖語 *kalwa- にさかのぼり、原義は「羽や毛がまだない」です。ひなの“つるりと裸っぽい”姿から「経験の羽がまだ生えていない」人を表すようになり、今の「未熟な」につながります。関連語に callowness とドイツ語 kahl があります。
From Old English calu, meaning "bare" or "bald," from Germanic *kalwa-. It first described young birds with no feathers yet. From that image of being still "unfledged," it later came to mean someone young and inexperienced; German kahl is related.
