古英語 geoguþ（若さ）からゲルマン祖語 *jugunþiz に遡り、さらに印欧祖語 *yeu-（若い・活力）に由来する。young（若い）と同根で、ラテン語 juvenis（若者）とも親戚関係にある。juvenile（少年の）も同じ語源を持つ。
