stripling

/ˈstrɪplɪŋ/
noun

若者わかもの

解説 Definition

若い男性、青年。経験の浅い若い人を指すやや古風な表現。

A stripling is a young man, especially one who is not yet fully mature. The word often suggests youth and inexperience rather than simply age. It is old-fashioned and is more common in literary or historical writing than in modern daily speech.

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

まず語尾の -ling に反応し、ducklingyearling のように「小さい・若い・まだ一人前でない」仲間だとまとめて覚えると定着しやすいです。stripling もその系列で、細く若く、経験の浅い青年のイメージを重ねると忘れにくくなります。単なる「若者」なら youth や young man が普通で、stripling はやや古風で、青さ・未熟さをにじませる言い方だと押さえると使い分けしやすいです。

Notice the ending `-ling`, as in `duckling` or `yearling`, which often suggests someone small, young, or not fully grown. That makes `stripling` easier to remember as a young, inexperienced man. It also has an old-fashioned tone, so it feels less neutral than `young man`.

stripling の語源・成り立ち Etymology

中英語 stripling は strip(細い若枝)に縮小辞 -ling(小さいもの)を付けた語。細くひょろりとした若木のように、まだ体が細い未熟な若者を表す。同じ -ling を持つ duckling(子アヒル)や yearling(一歳の動物)と同じ造語法。

*Stripling* comes from Middle English *stripling*, built from *strip* and the smallness or youth suffix `-ling`. The image was of something thin and not yet fully grown, like a young shoot or slender branch. From there it came to mean a young, immature man, and it is formed in the same way as *duckling* and *yearling*.
