astigmatism はギリシャ語 a-「ない」+ stigma「点・印」に由来し、原義は「一点に焦点が結ばれない状態」。stigma や stigmatize も同根で、「点が定まらないから像がぶれる」と見ると乱視の意味が腑に落ちる。
Astigmatism comes from Greek a- meaning "not" and stigma meaning "point" or "mark." It originally meant a condition where light does not come to one clear point. The same root appears in stigma and stigmatize.
