nystagmus はギリシャ語 nystagmos「うとうとした揺れ」に由来し、nystazein「居眠りしてうなずく」が元です。nystagmic や nystagmoid も同系で、眠気でまぶたや頭がこくつくような小刻みの動きが、そのまま「眼振」の名になったと分かります。
`Nystagmus` comes from Greek `nystagmos`, meaning a drowsy nodding or swaying movement. It is related to the verb `nystazein`, meaning "to be sleepy" or "to nod while dozing."
