strabismus はギリシャ語 strabismos「目を細めること・斜めを見ること」に由来し、語幹 strab- は「ゆがんだ・斜めの」感覚です。strabic や strabismic も同根。視線がまっすぐそろわず横にずれる様子が、そのまま斜視の名になっています。
