アラビア語 lūfa（ヘチマの実）に由来し、エジプト経由で英語に入った。ヘチマ属の学名 Luffa も同源。スポンジ状の繊維が入浴用たわしとして広まり、植物名がそのまま日用品の名称になった珍しい例。
English borrowed loofah from Arabic lufa, probably through Egyptian Arabic. The scientific plant name Luffa comes from the same source. As the dried fibers became widely used for washing, the plant's name came to be used for the everyday bath item as well.
