覚え方のコツ
cantonment は「canton + -ment」で見ると覚えやすいです。-ment は movement, agreement などと同じく「状態・施設・結果」を作る語尾なので、「canton という区画にまとめられたもの」という感覚を持つと記憶に残ります。用法では military cantonment, army cantonment のように軍と強く結びつき、単なる camp より恒常的で、兵舎や設備を備えた駐屯地を指しやすい語です。Cantonese や canton と見た目が近いので混同に注意しましょう。
