覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
chevron はフランス語で屋根を支える「垂木」を表した語です。左右の垂木が合わさる V 字を思い浮かべ、chevron pattern(連続する山形模様)や chevron mark(単独の山形印)で覚えます。zigzag は線が何度も折れる形、chevron は一つ一つの V 字形に注目する語です。
Picture the two sloping beams of a roof meeting to form a V. That image reflects the earlier sense of French chevron, “rafter,” and leads naturally to the modern shape. Learn the word in combinations such as chevron pattern, chevron design, and chevron mark. A single V-shaped stripe can be a chevron, and repeated chevrons create the familiar decorative pattern. Compare zigzag: a zigzag emphasizes one line repeatedly changing direction, whereas a chevron pattern emphasizes a row or arrangement of distinct V shapes.

chevron の語源・成り立ち Etymology
フランス語chevron(垂木)から英語に入り、ラテン語capra(山羊)に遡る。山羊の角がV字に開く形から屋根の垂木→V字・山形模様へと意味が広がった。関連語:Capricorn(山羊座)、caper(跳ね回る)。
Chevron entered English from French chevron, meaning a rafter and later a V-shaped figure. The French word is traditionally connected with Latin caper or capra, “goat,” probably through an association between angled rafters and a goat’s spreading horns or forked legs. The architectural shape became a heraldic device and then a general term for V-shaped marks and repeating decorative patterns. The company name Chevron is a later proper-name use of the common noun.
