解説 Definition
chimera は、複数の異なる要素が組み合わさった存在や、ギリシャ神話の怪物「キメラ」を指します。日本語の「キメラ」と近い意味ですが、英語では生物学で異なる遺伝的性質を持つ細胞が混在する個体を指すこともあります。
A chimera is the composite monster of Greek mythology or, more generally, something made from strikingly different parts. In biology, it is an organism containing cells derived from more than one genetically distinct source.

Picture the mythological Chimera, a single monster combining parts of several animals. That image provides the central memory link: different origins are present within one being. In biology, a chimera contains populations of cells from genetically distinct sources. This is not automatically the same as a hybrid, whose genetic material is combined through reproduction within cells. The adjective is chimeric, as in chimeric cells or a chimeric organism. In mythology the name may be capitalized, while the general and biological noun is commonly lowercase.

Chimera entered English through Latin chimaera from Greek khimaira, literally “she-goat.” In Greek mythology, the Chimera was a composite fire-breathing creature conventionally described with features of a lion, goat, and serpent. The creature’s mixed form led to broader senses involving an unnatural combination or an imagined creation. Biology later adopted the term for an organism containing genetically distinct groups of cells, preserving the central idea of unlike elements joined in one body.
