comet は古フランス語・ラテン語を経て、ギリシャ語 kometes「長い髪の人」にさかのぼります。尾を引く姿が髪のように見えたためで、「彗星」が“毛のある星”と呼ばれた感覚だと分かります。関連語に coma があります。
"Comet" came through Latin and Old French from Greek kometes, meaning "long-haired one." People used this image because a comet's tail looked like long hair streaming behind it. A related word is coma, which originally also referred to hair.
