自分と同じ国の出身者、または同じ国の国民である人を指す名詞です。単なる同一国内の居住者という意味ではなく、愛国心や親しさを必ずしも含みません。
A compatriot is a person who comes from the same country as you. The word is often used in formal writing, politics, or when speaking about people living abroad.

compatriot は patriot（愛国者）と形が似ていますが、意味の中心は愛国心ではなく「自分と同じ国の出身者・国民」です。friend や colleague と違い、基準となる共通点は国であり、個人的な親しさは必要ありません。countryman に近い、やや硬めの語で、記事・演説・歴史文脈では fellow compatriots や support a compatriot のように使われます。

フランス語compatriote、さらに後期ラテン語compatriotaからで、com-「共に」＋patria「祖国」から成ります。もともと「同じ祖国をもつ人」なので、同胞・同国人の意味が自然です。関連語にpatriot、patrioticがあります。
Compatriot came through French from Late Latin compatriota. It is made from com-, meaning "with" or "together," and patria, meaning "native country." So the word originally meant a person who shares the same homeland. Patriot and patriotic come from the same patria root.
