reflexive の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ラテン語 reflectere「後ろへ曲げ返す」から。re-「後ろへ」+ flect「曲げる」が元で、作用や指示が自分へ戻る感覚から文法の「再帰的な」になった。
Reflexive comes through Latin from reflectere, meaning "to bend back." The parts re- meant "back," and flect meant "bend." From this idea of turning back, the word developed the grammar meaning of referring back to the subject.
