覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
coping は cope「困難に対処する」の現在分詞・動名詞です。語末の無音の e を落として -ing を付け、発音は /ˈkoʊpɪŋ/ となります。cope with stress・change・loss のように通常 with を伴い、単に問題を解決するより、苦しい状況を何とか切り抜けている過程を表すと覚えます。
Coping is formed from cope by dropping the final silent e and adding -ing; it is pronounced /ˈkoʊpɪŋ/. Keep the usual pattern cope with something: coping with stress, coping with change, or coping with a loss. The word focuses on managing and continuing through difficulty, not necessarily solving or eliminating its cause. It can function in a continuous verb phrase, as in “She is coping well,” or as a gerund naming the process, as in “Coping with change takes time.”
例文
She is coping with stress at work.
彼女は職場のストレスに対処しています。
Coping with change takes time.

He is coping well after the move.
彼は引っ越し後の状況にうまく対処しています。

coping の語源・成り立ち Etymology
古フランス語 couper(打つ・切る)を経てラテン語 colaphus(拳の一撃)、さらにギリシャ語 kolaphos(平手打ち)に遡る。cope は本来「敵の攻撃に切り結ぶ・立ち向かう」意味で、そこから「困難に対処する」へ発展した。関連語は coup(一撃・クーデター)。困難と「格闘する」感覚が cope の核心にある。
Coping is the -ing form of cope, created by dropping cope’s final silent e before adding -ing. Cope developed from a verb meaning to strike, encounter, or contend, associated through French with Latin colaphus and Greek kolaphos, “a blow.” Its sense moved from physically meeting an opponent to facing difficulty successfully. The modern expression cope with therefore retains the underlying image of confronting or struggling with a challenging situation.
