credentialingはcredential+-ingで、credentialは中世ラテン語credentialis、さらにラテン語credere「信じる」にさかのぼります。核のcred-は「信頼」で、認証がまず信用付与の行為だと見える語です。credoやcredenceが近縁です。
Credentialing comes from credential plus the suffix -ing. Credential goes back through Medieval Latin credentialis to Latin credere, meaning "to believe" or "to trust."
