Memory Tip
debate a rule や debate which design to choose のように、異なる案や立場について理由を示しながら検討する場面で使います。
Debating is made from debate by dropping the final e before adding -ing. Picture people presenting reasons for and against a school rule, or a team debating which design to choose. The word suggests that competing positions or options are being examined. Discussing is broader and may involve any exchange of ideas, while arguing can suggest either giving reasons or having an angry disagreement. Debating often sounds more structured and issue-focused. Remember the common patterns debate an issue and debate whether or which option to choose.

Etymology
ラテン語 de-(下へ、完全に)+ battere(打つ)から古フランス語 debatre(打ち合う)を経て英語に。 関連語: battle(戦い), combat(戦闘)。
Debating is the -ing form of debate. Debate entered English through Old French debatre, whose earlier physical sense was “to fight” or “to beat down.” The French form was built from de- and batre, “to beat,” ultimately related to Late Latin battere. The idea of physical combat shifted figuratively to an exchange in which opposing arguments are set against one another.
