debater は debate に -er が付いた語で、debate は古フランス語 debatre、さらにラテン語系で de-「離れて」+ battre「打つ」にさかのぼります。もとは「打ち合う」が「言葉を戦わせる」になった語で、battle や batter も同じ打つ感覚を残します。
