A debtor is a person or organization that owes money to someone else. It is mainly used in financial, business, and legal contexts. The opposite idea is a creditor, which means the person or organization that is owed money.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
まず debt を見てすぐつながるようにするのが近道。debt が「借金」なら、debt-or で「借金を負っている側の人」と覚える。セットで creditor（お金を貸している側）と対にすると定着しやすい。法律・金融では debtor and creditor の形でよく出る。debit とつづりが近いので混同しやすいが、debtor はあくまで「人」。請求され、返済義務を負う立場だと押さえるとぶれにくい。

debtor はラテン語 debitor 由来で、debere「負う・借りがある」から来た。de-「離れて」＋ habere「持つ」で、手元にないものを返す義務の感覚がある。debt や debit も同根で、「負い目のある人」とつながる。
