せん妄とは、意識や思考が混乱した急性の精神状態を指します。特に高熱や中毒、脳疾患などが原因で生じる幻覚や支離滅裂な言動が特徴です。医学用語として、一時的な精神混乱を表します。
Delirium is a serious state of mental confusion in which a person cannot think clearly and may not understand what is real. It often happens during severe illness, high fever, injury, or drug effects. The word is mainly used in medical contexts.

delirium はラテン語 delirare『正気を失う』由来で、de-『外れて』+ lira『畑の溝・筋』が語源です。『まっすぐな筋から外れる』比喩がせん妄になり、関連語 delirious を見ると、心が本来の軌道を外す感覚として理解できます。
Delirium comes from Latin delirare, meaning "to go out of the furrow" or "go off the track." It is made from de- "away from" and lira, a furrow or line in a field.
